What exactly are cookies?

A cookie is a small piece of information sent to the user’s browser and stored on the hard drive of the computer, cell phone, or another device.

You can set your browser to alert you when you receive a cookie. This way, you can decide whether to accept it or refuse it. However, some services and features offered through the website may not work properly if cookies are disabled.

Cookies can be first-party (or proprietary) or third-party.

First-party or proprietary cookies: These are those installed on the computer by the website visited by the user.

Third-party cookies: These are those installed on the computer through the website visited by the user by a third party, such as Google. It is possible that during the user’s browsing on the website, some cookies are stored on their device that are not directly controlled and managed by the Data Controller. This happens, for example, when the user visits a page that includes content from a third-party website. In this regard, it should be noted that the company Carbon Planet s.r.l. acts as the Data Controller exclusively with reference to first-party cookies installed on the website, while it does not play any role in the processing of data derived from third-party cookies, as these are simple technical intermediaries.

Types of cookies. As per the general provision of the Italian Data Protection Authority (the “Authority”) of May 8, 2014, regarding “Identification of simplified methods for providing information and obtaining consent for the use of cookies”, as well as pursuant to the provision of June 10, 2021 – published in the Official Gazette No. 163 of July 9, 2021, regarding “Cookie guidelines and other tracking tools”, cookies are divided into two main areas: technical cookies, for which users’ prior consent to their installation is not required, and profiling cookies, which can only be installed with the prior consent of users.

Technical cookies are those used solely for “the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide that service” (cf. Article 122, paragraph 1, of the Privacy Code).

They must be considered technical:

  • navigation or session cookies and functionality;
  • analytical cookies, only when used directly by the website operator to collect information, in aggregated and anonymous form, about the number of users and how they visit the website.

Profiling cookies are “used to trace specific, identified, or identifiable subjects, actions, or recurring behavioral patterns in the use of the features offered (patterns) in order to group different profiles into homogeneous clusters of various sizes, so that the owner can, among other things, also tailor the provision of the service in an increasingly personalized manner beyond what is strictly necessary for the provision of the service, as well as send targeted advertising messages, that is, in line with the preferences expressed by the user during web browsing.”

Analytical cookies. The Data Controller uses the third-party analytical service Google Analytics. Analytical cookies help the Data Controller understand how site visitors interact with the sites by collecting and transmitting information in aggregated and therefore anonymous form, generating statistics on the use of the web portal. Google Analytics uses cookies, which are deposited on your device to analyze your use of the site. The information generated by the cookie is intended to count visits, track and examine website usage, compile reports on website activity, and provide other services to the Data Controller related to website activity, connection methods (mobile, PC, browser used, region and location from which access is made, etc.), and search methods and page access on the portal. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law or where such third parties process the information on Google’s behalf. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google.

It’s possible to disable Google Analytics cookies using the opt-out add-on provided by Google for major browsers. By doing so, it’s still possible to use online services. To disable, click here: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Social media cookies or widgets. These cookies, along with plugins, allow the use of social media network features such as LinkedIn, as well as the Google search engine on this website. They are permanent cookies that remain on the user’s device until their expiration or manual deletion. These cookies can only be installed with the user’s consent. Any installation on the site of widgets and social network plugins (e.g., buttons allowing users to share website content with social networks like LinkedIn and others, or the quick access mode to services on the website through the “sign in with social profile” option) will always be preceded by the user’s consent, as sites managed by third parties pointed to by such widgets and plugins may install their own profiling cookies.

If the user uses such features, the plugin and its content are loaded directly from the servers of the social media or search engine providers and included in the website by the user’s browser. If the user accesses their social media account or logs in using their Google account while interacting with the plugins of these platforms on our website, the relevant social media provider and Google will link this information to the user’s existing user profile. The Owner cannot influence the type of personal data collected by the social platform provider or Google, as they have no control over their respective processing policies. All plugins on the site are marked with the respective logo owned by the social network platform (e.g., LinkedIn) or search engine (e.g., Google).

For information on the purposes, type, and methods of collection, processing, use, and storage of personal data by the social network platform and search engine, as well as how to exercise your rights, please refer to the privacy policy adopted by each social network and search engine. These are third-party cookies. For further information, users are invited to consult the privacy policies of LinkedIn and Google:
